Thermowood Decking

Thermowood - The Process of Heat Modifying timber and its effects and characteristics.

Thanks to Thermowood heat treatment, wood is far more durable against decay and far better able to repel the impact of water and moisture. Heat treatment refers to heating timber up in a controlled manner in high temperatures without using chemical additives so that various chemical and physical changes take place in the timber, providing a hygenic and safe product. These changes vary according to, for instance, the temperature and time used, drying method as well as timber species.

The Thermowood process refines the Nordic species of timber into arctic hardwood with beautiful shades of colour. Due to the changed properties heat treated timber is well suited to being used in various kinds of high level construction projects while taking sustainable development into consideration.

Thermowood exterior cladding boards will also keep their shape and their weather-proofing characteristics are excellent. The dimensional stability of the boards means that paint does not crack and there is less frequent need to recoat the boards. Resin is eliminated during treatment and thus resin is no longer a visual problem. Boards can be UV protected by using light pigment coatings. Planed, non-coated boards are easy and safe to coat and process on the construction site. The boards will keep their straightness during storage, and waste can be easily disposed of, eg. by burning it in wood burners etc.

Equilibrium moisture content decreases by 10-15%
- Wood becomes lighter

Hydroscopicity decreases by 30-90%
- Hardness increases

Thermal resistance improves by 0-30%
- Decay and weather resistance improves

The absorption of water reduces
- The risk of mould reduces

The colour of wood darkens thoroughly
- Resin dries

Splitting and bending strength reduced somewhat
