Isn't timber decking expensive?

Not neccesarily. Compared to a traditional paving/flooring methods, deck construction is much less labour intensive, which can represent savings that can be passed on to you.

Does building timber decking have a negative impact on the environment?

Not at all! The sort of wood used in timber decking comes from responsible producers who encourage proper management of their resources. This involves both the conservation of forest, and their renewal through replanting schemes. Furthermore, the production of man-made building materials can be far more environmentally damaging.

Are the treatments used in protecting softwood timber decking in any way harmful?

No. Timber decking is entirely safe - even for animals and plants. The strictly controlled process of impregnating the timber means that the preservative substances found in decking are 'locked' into the wood - even when in contact with water.
